Interior Doors: A Guide to Selection and Use
Doors are the silent heroes of our homes. We use them many times a day but rarely think about them. However, the right choice of door deeply affects both the appearance and functionality of our living spaces. In this guide, I will guide you through the entire process from door selection to maintenance.
Which one is for me?
I often see them when I walk around the construction site with my coffee in my hand; some of my customers are struck by the warmth of wood, others by the modernity of metal. I have been in this business for years and I can say this clearly: Each door has its own character.
Wooden doors, for example… They bring the warmth of nature into your home. They also work wonders for sound insulation, but you don’t want to see them in the bathroom – moisture is their nemesis. Metal doors are a fortress of security. They are especially preferred in apartments. But they are not as generous as wood when it comes to insulation.
Glass doors… Oh that spacious look… They work wonders in small homes. But if you want privacy, there are other options to consider.
Measurement and Dimensioning
Some of my customers say, “Master, give us a standard size”. However, door selection is not that simple. Each house, each room has its own rhythm. Generally, heights vary between 200-220 cm and widths between 60-100 cm. Thickness is usually 4-6 cm. But the important thing is to find the size that fits your home.
Color and Pattern Selection
The choice of color almost sets the mood of a room. When you put a dark door on a light-colored wall, how it adds depth! Or vice versa… It all depends on the effect you want to create.
Are you looking for calmness? Blue tones are for you. Do you want energy? Think yellow or orange. For a classic look, natural shades of wood are always a safe choice.
Cost Planning
Prices vary widely according to material quality, brand and design. It can start from 500 TL and go up to 2000 TL. My master used to say that a cheap door is always a costly door. He was right. Although a quality door may seem a bit expensive at first, it will save you from maintenance costs in the long run.
Assembly Process
Installation is the heart of the door business. Even the best quality door can be a nuisance if installed incorrectly. Placing the door properly, adjusting the hinges correctly… These are the tricks of the trade. It is best to consult an expert on this subject.
Safety Precautions
When it comes to security, first look at the lock system. A simple one-way lock or a multi-point security system – choose according to your needs. Material quality is also important. Metal doors lead the way in security, but a quality wooden door will not let you down.
Accessories and Details
When choosing a door handle, pay attention not only to appearance but also to ergonomics. Hinges are the hidden heroes of the door – a poor quality hinge will cause you trouble over time. As for locks, do not compromise on quality.
Insulation Properties
Good insulation is important for both heat and sound. This is especially vital for exterior doors. Seals and sealing tapes are small but effective solutions.
Maintenance and Cleaning
Each type of door has its own maintenance needs. Wooden doors require regular polishing. Metal doors need rust preventative care. A soft, damp cloth is usually sufficient for cleaning. Avoid heavy chemicals.
Choose your door with care, install it with care, use it with love. Remember, doors are not just a part of your home, they are a reflection of its character.
